Harriet Vane

Dickens has us down pat

Since I began to read Dickens once again -- with the Inimitable-Boz Yahoo reading group (and a couple of years before due to my studying film adaptations, of which there are many Dickens ones) -- since I returned to Dickens, I say, I am aware of how he hits indirectly into his readers' lives -- or selves. A joke today. I won't say what was the occasion but I turned round to the admiral and said, "you are always floppin' 'agin me." I meant it and was irritated, had been thwarted by him, but the Dickens' language enabled me to turn what I said into a half-joke. The admiral (who got my meaning perfectly): "No I don't. I avoid flopping."
